TU-K Mourns Prof. George Eshiwani

The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of the Chairman of the Council Prof. George Eshiwani.

Prof. EShiwani was an accomplished mathematician, prolific author and an astute university administrator.
His family said Prof Eshiwani collapsed at his home in Butere and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu where he died while undergoing treatment on Saturday 4th April 2015.

He was born in 1941 in Khwisero, Kakamega County. He had his primary education at Ekambuli Primary School in Khwisero and later on joined Namosoli Intermediate School in Butere.

He joined the then Government African School (current Kakamega High School) from where he sat both his "O" and "A" levels.

In 1967, he graduated from the Then University of East Africa (University of Nairobi) with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Chemistry. He briefly taught at Alliance High School before proceeding for further studies in the USA where he joined Stanford University in California where he studied for both his Master's in 1971 and PhD degree in mathematics in 1974.

Prof. Eshiwani rose from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of education excellence and management. He served as the first principal of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and later on appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University by former President Daniel arap Moi. He also served as President of African Virtual University and later as the first Pro-Chancellor at Mount Kenya University before being appointed the founding Chairman of TU-K Council in 2013.

Prof. Eshiwani is a recipient of various honours and awards including the UNESCO Fellowship Research Fund, Ford Foundation Research Grant and the Rockefeller Foundation Research Grant. The country and indeed the world has lost one of the finest scholars.
